Happy 4th Birthday, Elsie!

August 15 was Elsie's 4th birthday... she had been counting down the days for a long time! When it was finally here, she could hardly believe it! When asked what she wanted for her birthday, she said, "A sandbox!" So, as it cools off, that is in the plans. :)
At our house, we get to pick what we want for our birthday supper. Elsie picked hot dogs and a pink cake. Everything had to be pink... the cake and the icing! And she made sure she was wearing her pink dress, too!

Hi! It's been a long time since I have blogged... I have thought about it many times, but unfortunately thinking doesn't get it done!

I don't have much news, except that it is HOT!! This afternoon at 5pm it was 110 degrees... in the shade, I might add! :)

The following are just a few snapshots of bringing cows to the barn or taking them back out to pasture.

This last one is Daffodil, our first heifer calf that was born on our farm! She is supposed to have her first calf in January 2012.

Elsie is the youngest in the family, so she is just a little spoiled! :) Of course, we have many picturess with her and her pets, so I thought I would share some with you...

She spent most of the day holding, feeding, and playing with this bunny until it got sick and died. Now she can hardly wait until the next batch of bunnies are big enough to play with!

She loves to have her picture taken 'like the big girls!' Here is a sample of how that turns out!!

Last Saturday was our school program and picnic, so of course we got sunburnt! Mom was going through that favorite part of a sunburn when it peels and Elsie looks at Mom and says with all seriousness, "Mom, your nose is coming apart!" She never fails to bring some cheer to each day!

Goin' Fishin'!!

Last evening we went over to a pond on Harmon Ranch and went fishing! We had a lot of fun, even if we didn't catch any fish... but we "caught" a lot of pics and memories! :) I'll post a few of them so ya'll can enjoy!

The sunset was beautiful and the lighting was just right for a few minutes....

Back Again!

Hi Folks!

Well, I'm back! I decided to come back to this blog because I just really didn't like to blog on the one that came with our website... so here we are again! :)

A lot has happened in the last year.... I'll try to give a brief update:

Meet Daisy! She is on of our 30 jersey/jersey cross/brown swiss cows that graze every day. The cows are really enjoying the lush green grass this spring....

In October 2010 we got our Grade A Retail Raw License! That means ya'll can come out to the farm and buy good wholesome milk! We have also added quite a few other products to the list.. please check the products page.

We are really excited about serving the community with raw all natural milk!

SNOW! 11.2 inches in one day for Dallas is what I heard the official record is. That's up from the daily snow record of 1.4 inches. From the records, though, it isn't all that unheard of.....the total record snowfall in Dallas for February is 17.5 inches in 1978. From what I can see, it will be a WET Saturday....maybe most of you all will be out and about enjoying the pretty scenery and shopping at the Farmers Markets. It's a good place to go on a Saturday when you can browse the vendor displays and see what kind of bargains you can get. We'll be at Dallas and Firewheel.

We have a lot of back country roads around where we live. In the more remote part of these hills, after the last house, the road will suddenly turn to dirt and snake through and come out on another road. I thought I knew where the gravel ended. On a snowy night, after dark, when the sun is about as hidden as it could be, very cloudy and still snowing, you would think it would be pitch black. Well, it isn't. All the white snow puts off light and you can see around very well. How would you like to walk 3 miles home after you took a drive and got stuck? It isn't so bad, actually, on a night like last night. Not very cold, snowing lightly, beautiful, and quiet. The snow crunches under your feet. Coyotes are howling on the next ridge over........you are out in hills where there were mountain lion seen last summer.......you walk right by your neighbors farm where these mountain lions got several of his calves. I would think they would be hungry on a night like last night but if they were around us, we missed them. A mountain lion is the same as a panther....we talked about stories of Pa Ingalls and how a panther screamed when it chased him and also stories about the Waldensiens walking.....fleeing over the mountains because they were being persecuted for their faith. Many of them, especially children, didn't make it as they weren't dressed warm like we were and it was bitter cold where they were. It's a great time to tell these stories as it make it more real. Well, that's what happens when either you are too daring with a big 4X4 truck or don't have enough sense to stop when it's time to. I thought I knew where the gravel ended. It suddenly ended and the dirt was soft and slimy right down a steep hill. I almost made it after creating ruts to get a run in but slipped out of them and that ended it. The truck is still on the road but it will have to stay there till it dries up a little. No one else will make it through anyway. A family of 8 with a little one to carry don't walk real fast in the snow. Maybe 2 mph. If it's 11:00 when you go down that hill and 11:45 by the time you've given up and 12:05 when you get everybody out of the truck and another 20 minutes to get on top the hill, what time do you think it was when we walked in our door? Your right!

I don't know if you noticed it last week or not, but we have new 8oz jars. They are a smooth sided jar.......we had the ball jars with the two piece lid which looked old fashioned. We like that part of it as it reflects the kind of old fashioned quality we try for. The jars we have now are excellent quality and a one piece lid. The others are too hard to find for an economical price and the worse thing about them is how hard it is to put a label on them and make them look nice. We also have a new jar for the Granola. It's a 24oz jar instead of the 32oz and we will charge $5 instead of $6. This will help our pricing structure and keep it simpler. The previous styles and sizes are still available while we have them.

I think we might have a nice day for market tomorrow. This morning it was still cloudy but the sun is coming out. Why do we say that? Is the sun shining at your house today? How does the sun come out? The earth is making it's normal rotations and the clouds were in the way of us seeing the sun. The sun is always shining! Even at night. It is rightly described as the greater light (sun) to rule the day and the lesser light (moon) to rule the night. God made them that way. Anyway, we are seeing the sun today and glad of it. Are you?

The bakers here are getting excited about these new chocolate brownies. They are heart shaped with some icing drizzled over them. I guess there will be some decorated ones, too. I don't know what is so neat about a heart shaped something. A cow, horse, dog, or tractor would be something to get excited over. Or eating them. Chocolate cake with real milk. Mmm! Sound good?

“Raw milk” is a strange term. It shouldn't be called “raw”. It's “real milk”. Do we call tomatoes “raw” when we get them out of the garden? Oh, by the way, we are probably going to buy “raw” tomatoes at the market tomorrow. We might get some “raw” apples and maybe some “raw” pineapple. I guess if we cook all the enzymes out of them, we'll just end up with tomatoes, apples, and the pineapple. What kind of milk do you drink?

In honor of Chocolate Lover's Month, the Dallas Farmers Market is having a celebration for it...............so we have “Chocolate Lover's Brownies”. These are heart shaped with fudge icing. Happy February!!

     Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

     The Dallas, Fort Worth region gets in the neighborhood of 34 inches of precipitation per year. I said "in the neighborhood!" That's as close to right as I can get from a 30 second google search. The above verse is a promise from God that the seasons will stay intact as long as the earth remains. We are in the time of year when it gets cold over most of the United States. And we get some nice days to go along with it. The nice days make us grouchy (and maybe a bit unthankful) on the "dreary" days. Hmm.... We all have our likes and dislikes. Some people like cold weather and some like hot weather. What do you like?

     I like coffee. Hot coffee on a cold and hot coffee on a hot day. I enjoy selling coffee and I also enjoy selling breads and jam. We will be at the Dallas Farmers Market and Four Seasons Market in Firewheel Town Center on Saturday. I'm glad the McKinney Farmers Market postponed until next Saturday with the weather like it is.

     I was to the Dallas Farmers Market today and bought some vegetables... I also bought some blueberries. I brought them home, gave them (the blueberries) to my dear wife and a pie showed up for supper! You can see the picture below.

            Last week was a nice week and this week is nicer. I am normal this week with all the sunshine. The children went barefooted all week. I thought if the children go barefooted, that would be a sign the weather is nice. But Linda went barefooted to milk the cows when we had all that cold weather.....14 degrees and all! She said the frost felt good on her feet.

           The soil is drying and the farmers are getting in their fields. I don't think there's much of a chance of snow anymore. It was scary there for a while. I found out Texans DO NOT like cold weather! But I also found out Texas gets cold sometimes. As someone said, the only thing between here and Montana is a barbed wire fence and that is down sometimes.

           Thanks for the good sales last week. That helped me be normal, too! It even made the sunshine brighter this week. Maybe it'll be brighter next week. Several months ago....in October, I believe, when we had all that rain..... we didn't see the sun for almost two weeks straight. That was different for Texas! It made it seem brighter when it did show up.

           Popcorn is always good no matter the weather. It's made fresh almost everyday at our house. Usually sometime in the evening I hear the popcorn kettle on the stove. Soon bowls of popcorn get passed around. Popped in Texas Olive Ranch oil! Oh, that's good!! It's like learning what a good cup of coffee taste like and then it's hard to find it just anywhere.

           Recently I heard a friend of mine tell someone he has a formula for life. This is what it is..... Happy wife = Happy life. He seemed genuinely pleased about it and I'm sure he's enjoying the benefits of domestic bliss. There seems to be some secrets to the nuts and bolts of how this works. In his case it was taking firewood home for the fireplace.

           I wanted to be sure to tell you about my birthday supper...... it was fish from “The Shrimp Stop” and it was sooooo good!! We had fish, fried mush, cooked cabbage, hushpuppies, garden fresh turnips, and of course, a cake decorated in John Deere green with one of Mylin's toy tractors on it. It had a loader so they put a pile of our Hot Chocolate mix on it....made it look like it was scooping it up. A good attempt to make it look like my real tractor. It all ended with a great cup of Green Leaf Coffee. All this translates into domestic bliss, too!

           I'm looking forward to seeing all you vendors again. It's good to see you each Saturday, although you customers are the best. :) We plan to be at Firewheel Town Center (Four Seasons Market) on Saturday and the Dallas Farmer's Market on Friday and Saturday.

          By the way, we have some new products this week. BethAnn probably won't have them at Dallas on Friday but she is planning on having them there on Saturday and we also plan to have them at Firewheel Town Center on Saturday. Here's two........

1. Sunflower Rye Bread.

2. Monkey Bread.

           These new products are like all the rest of our products, we don't use any preservatives. That means you are eating food that is better for you than store bought stuff.

This Saturday the baked goods will be so good,
Lisa and the girls are in a baking mood.
We'll have them at market for you to see,
and you can have them for a fee.

We hope you will find the bread you want,
come early or you will have to hunt.
If you want some goodies, we have it all,
in loaves of bread from wall to wall!

The Jalapeño cheese bread will melt in your mouth,
at least if you are from the south.
Our whole wheat bread is so soft and grand,
it is no wonder it's in demand!

And the soft white bread will seem so smooth,
to the touch and it the palate will soothe.
That's the three we first did make,
for you see, my wife does love to bake!

The sweet breads like banana nut,
come see for yourself, a slice to cut.
And the luscious lemon is not so bad,
if a cup of milk you only had.

The peanut butter is another one,
a brand new bread, the trial is done.
The cinnamon raisin is an old standby,
toasted with butter, oh me, oh my!

The coconut crumb is tasty and grand,
it needs no help for it will stand.
And that's about all except there's more,
if you order a pie from the Rosey Ridge store.

Now the jams, you see, we make here, too,
and we don't do it bad, though it's kind of new.
Made in the good old fashioned way,
that's why it's new in this time and day.

The strawberry taste is grand and real,
with a slice of bread along with a meal.
Get the raspberry one, because we do,
make it just like grandma and Aunt Elsie, too!

Peach is a few people's favorite choice,
they remember the taste and “wow” they rejoice.
Now blackberry is my favorite jam,
it'll win every time with the grandest slam!

Blueberry is sweet and kind of dark blue,
like a blueberry pie and so good, too.
Texas Traffic Jam, a specialty,
a famous cause, it was named by me.

A little more about that Traffic Jam stuff,
that line didn't do it, it wasn't enough!
The traffic jam that will make you smile,
it will cause one too, for many a mile!

A best seller, too, for some will cry,
if we sell out and tell them why.
I don't blame them them though and I'll tell you what,
we'll make you some and then you'll be caught!

The chocolate mix is made for milk,
pure and sweet, smooth as silk.
Granola for breakfast, cold cereal then,
will brighten you up, if you've no eggs or hen.

Our Green Leaf Coffee is the best around,
roasted fresh and pure from it's native town,
The farmer who grew it, from him to you,
the best of his crop, we roast it for brew.

It's done that way and you can know,
the next years crop he still can grow,
cause you paid him and now he can more than survive,
and call his home his, for his family of five.

I guess this newsletter is now done,
the ladies here told me to write the first one.
I thought this way wouldn't be so hard,
so you can see the jams got jarred.

The bread is baking and smells so good,
I am writing this while it's turning to food.
If you like this line, I'll do it some more,
and you can laugh at me till you're on the floor!

It was cold this morning! We had 16 degrees but fortunately the wind wasn't blowing like it was night before last. Now that wind was COLD! Water troughs froze up but the animals did okay by getting out of the wind.

Today the market was quiet........ where were you?? I know, it was cold, but we were there!

A few people came by and we had a few sales so we can appreciate that. I think next week will be better and warmer and we'll see more of you all.

Don't forget our new coffees....... come by and check them out. Brewed coffee is being served there and you can taste it..........

BURR!!

Greetings in Jesus Name.
It was cold on Saturday!! I called Terry there while I was at another market and he answered, "North Pole speaking". There wasn't much activity around but we didn't blame anyone as the temperature didn't really call for it! Most people seemed interested in getting somewhere warm.

It's the start of a another week and it's starting out wet but we have some nice, warm, dry weather in the predictions. Predictions don't give us good weather and it seems they are a little too willing to change the predictions so we'll see what happens. We are kinda tired of the mud here at the farm, actually, but it could be worse, so we'll not complain. In the meantime, we'll get the baking going for this Saturday and you all get ready for some loaves and jams!

Gift Baskets!!!!!

We will have a sample of a gift basket at the markets this week. We did last Saturday and got a lot of comments on needing them closer to Christmas.......and I sold my sample right away at the Firewheel Market. I wasn't supposed to but had a semi senior moment!! :( Thought I could blame it on Terry but it didn't work......so we'll try again with another sample and you can buy it but you can't have it till the end of the market.

I enjoyed posting this and I hope you enjoy reading it but I hope you enjoy buying our products and I hope you enjoy the products you buy for yourself and for the others you buy for I hope you hope they enjoy them and I hope they do, too!! I hope you know I won't go down this hope line all the time or you will get tired of hopes and hop somewhere else!

     The Hooley family lives in rural Hill County, Texas on a small farm with a variety of animals. Cows, chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, rabbits, horses, dogs, and cats make up the many sounds at chore time on this farm.
     We enjoy animals and farm life, growing as much of our food as we can. Our milk cows, Daisy and Bossy, provide us with milk, butter, and cheese. Our cows pasture graze with supplemental hay. The chickens and pigs are grown on whey, buttermilk, and kitchen leftovers, making a more economical feed and a sustainable food chain. We do not feed our animals hormones or commercial feed.
     Rosey Ridge Farm bakery products, home made jams, granola, hot chocolate mix, cappuccino, roasted coffee, and gift baskets are offered to you as an extension of our farm life and its qualities.
